British Council long copy 1

H/l: He used steel to prove his mettle.

Copy: Calcutta born Lakshmi Niwas Mittal inherited the foreign operations of the family steel business in 1976 - a single site rid mill established as a greenfield project. What he also inherited was his father's keen business sense and a sense of adventure.

Keen to prove his mettle from metal, Lakshmi Mittal set about his business. That year saw the emergence of Ispat Indo as the country's largest private owned steel company. Lakshmi Mittal, true to form, struck when the iron was hot and rapidly expanded to establish a platform for global expansion.

Soon only this London based businessman's own drive could surpass that of his acquisition. Acquiring along the way, fame, renown and a $127 million, 12 bedroom mansion in Kensington Palace Gardens - a record price for a private residence.

Now three decades after his entree as an entrepreneur, Laxmi Mittal stands tall as the third richest man in the world and the wealthiest man in the UK.

The United Kingdom has had the fortune to turn people's fortunes. Many a times. From the industrial revolution to the Internet revolution, opportunities abound, as do opportunists.

The UK. Arrive and thrive.
